Clara 2-12 ...... Ballyskenagh 2-13
Ballyskenagh made it four wins out of four with a narrow victory over Clara in Clara on Tuesday 20th May. Mid way through the first half Clara were a point up at 1-5 to 1-4, with Skenagh's points coming from Tadhg Maher, John Dooley (2 frees) and Derek Middleton and the goal from Kevin Tuohy. An Aidan Franks '65 put the sides all square before Tadhg Maher put Skenagh's noses in front. Approaching the half time whistle, Clara drew level again and so the half time score was 1-6 apiece.
Clara drew first blood three minutes in to the second half, but a brace of pointed frees from John Dooley gave the advantage back to Skenagh before a goal from Tadhg Maher in the 13th minute opened up a four point lead. Clara and Ballyskenagh (from John Dooley) exchanged pointed frees before Clara popped another over to bring the gap back to three. With ten minutes to go, Clara got the all important goal to draw level* (see below) and the game was set for a tense closing spell. Two John Dooley points (one free) gave Skenagh some breathing space but Clara quickly reduced the margin back to the minimum. An Alan Middleton free put the gap back to two, but Clara came again with a point to leave the minimum between the sides with just a minute on the clock, but a point from Aidan Franks was to be the last score of the game to leave Skenagh with what appeared to be a two point win.
*However, the ref had recorded the score as 2-13 to 2-12 so it appears the Ballyskenagh score-keepers missed a Clara point somewhere along the way, so the closing scores were even more crucial than realised!
