Shamrocks 2-14 ...... Ballyskenagh 3-09
Ballyskenagh were pipped at the post when they travelled to Mucklagh to take on Shamrocks in the Division 1 Hurling league on Sunday 17th June.
Shamrocks opened the scores inside the first half minute and Alan Middleton equalised just seconds later. Shamrocks edged in front again, with Ollie Ryan equalising in the fourth minute. Again Shamrocks got their noses in front with a point before Aidan Franks equalised with a free. Shamrocks scored three points without reply before a great effort from Noel Murphy got past their keeper to put the sides all square again with twelve minutes remaining in the half. An Aidan Franks '65 gave Skenagh the advantage and an Alan Middleton point from a free widened the gap to two. With two minutes to go, Noel Murphy got through for his second goal to give Skenagh a 2-5 to 0-6 lead at half time.
A great start to the second half for Shamrocks saw them pull the margin back to the minimum with four unanswered points in the first five minutes. Derek Middleton pointed in the seventh minute to put two between the sides. Then Emmet Middleton gave a great cross which was picked up by his cousin Alan who went all the way and raised the green flag for Skenagh's third goal. Shamrocks pointed twice (one free) before Skenagh replied with an Aidan Franks free to put the score at 3-7 to 0-12 with the midway point approaching. Shamrocks reduced the margin by one but Skenagh put it back to five with points from Aidan Franks (free) and Alan Middleton. Shamrocks piled on the pressure and with less than five minutes to go on the clock they made the breakthrough for their first goal of the game and reduce the margin to just two. Just over a minute later they took the lead with their second goal. Skenagh battled hard for the closing minutes but just could not manage the equaliser while Shamrocks tagged on an insurance point to emerge winners by 2-14 to 3-9.
