2006 Senior Hurling championship Round 3

Shinrone 2-12 ...... Ballyskenagh 2-08

Ballyskenagh's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2006 senior championship all but faded with a four point loss to Shinrone in Birr on Saturday 29th July. Minus the services of Derek Middleton and Tadhg Maher who suffered injuries against Tullamore, Ballyskenagh put in a far better performance than the previous week and the result was in the balance for much of the game.

Shinrone opened the scores inside the first half minute with a point and added another in the fifth minute. Skenagh registered their first score courtesy of Barry Keeshan who collected a pass from Brendan Murphy and put it over the bar. In the twelfth minute a John Dooley pass found the unmarked Noel Murphy in front of goal and Noel duly drilled the ball to the back of the net to give Skenagh a two point advantage. Morgan Lalor took a pass from Brendan Murphy to open the gap to three points and when John Dooley pointed a free mid way through the half Skenagh were four points ahead at 1-3 to 0-2. A Shinrone free reduced the margin to three and they went on to level the game in the 20th minute with a well taken goal. Nine minutes later Shinrone edged ahead with another point from a free, but Noel Murphy quickly equalised. A Timmy Hennessy point in injury time was the last score of the half, giving Skenagh the narrowest of leads at half time, 1-5 to 1-4.

With just half a minute gone in the second half, a Mick O'Hara free widened the gap to two and when David Carney scored a great goal in the 6th minute, the gap was opened up to five and Skenagh looked to be in the driving seat. However, it took less than a minute for Shinrone to get their revenge as Michael Cordial beat Alan Franks to bring the gap back to just two. In the thirteenth minute Shinrone pointed to draw level and less than thirty second later they got their noses in front with another point. A '65 and another point from play in the 17th minute had Shinrone ahead by three. A brace of points from David Carney (one from a free) had the margin back at the minimum with ten minutes remaining. Skenagh battled hard, not least Daryl Carney who made a brave run up the field before giving the ball to his brother David, but to no avail, as Shinrone defended well and closed down the advances. Shinrone went on to add three further points, to give them a well deserved four point win.

Ballyskenagh must now await the result of St. Rynaghs and Shinrone's remaining games against Drumcullen and Tullamore respectively, to see if they can make a play off by winning their last game against Drumcullen.
