2006 Senior Hurling championship Round 1

Ballyskenagh 1-13....... St. Rynaghs 1-11

Ballyskenagh's 2006 senior hurling campaign finally got underway when they took on St. Rynaghs in Birr on Saturday 6th of May.

Despite the advantage of a strong breeze, a slow start for Skenagh saw them behind by four points to one after 16 minutes - the single point coming from a Brendan Murphy free in the 10th minute. It was the 21st minute before Skenagh registered their second score, again courtesy of a Brendan Murphy free, and David Carney added a point four minutes later to bring the gap down to the minimum. When Ballyskenagh were awarded a free in the 27th minute, Alan Franks came up the field and duly sent the ball crashing to the back of the Rynagh's net to give Skenagh the upperhand with a 1-3 to 0-4 lead. Rynaghs didn't have to wait long for revenge and just a minute later they sent a free past Alan Franks to raise the green flag. Morgan Lalor levelled the scores at 1-4 each with just two minutes remaining in the half. Rynaghs again took the lead in the 29th minute but an Eoghan Franks free just before half time left it all square at the break at 1-5 each.

Skenagh were up against it for the second half, but came out a rejuvenated team and took the lead inside the first minute with another Eoghan Franks free. Rynaghs levelled again before Noel Murphy, David Carney and Eoghan Franks (from a free) gave Skenagh a three point lead at 1-9 to 1-6 in the 13th minute. However, the next three scores were from the Banagher side and they drew level again at 1-9 each with a '65 in the 23rd minute. On form Franks put another free over to regain a one point lead, but Rynaghs quickly replied with the equaliser. Eoghan restored the lead with a point from play in the 26th minute, with Rynaghs equalising yet again in the 27th. A heart-stopping final five minutes saw Skenagh dig deep and Eoghan Franks pointed twice from frees to leave the final score at 1-13 to 1-11.
