2006 Div 2 (Senior) League Round 8

Drumcullen 3-17 ...... Ballyskenagh 3-10

Ballyskenagh's grip on the top of the Division 2 league table was loosened when they played Drumcullen in Rath on Tuesday 13th June.

Skenagh opened the scoring in the first minute with a David Carney '65 and Carney also pointed a free before Drumcullen replied in the third minute. Two minutes later Ronan Middleton sent a long ball goalward and it bounced deceitfully over the Drumcullen goalkeeper's head to give Skenagh a 1-2 to 0-1 advantage. The same two players, Carney and Middleton, added a point each before Drumcullen replied with a point from a free. In the 14th minute a Drumcullen goal brought the gap back to two points at 1-4 to 1-2. Drumcullen went on to take the lead in the 19th minute with a free, having scored once from play and once from a '65. Derek Middleton levelled the sides with ten minutes remaining in the half, but Drumcullen again went two up. Another David Carney free in the 24th minute brought the gap back to the minimum and Drumcullen added another before the break to give them a 1-8 to 1-6 advantage.

By the third minute of the second half Drumcullen were three up, having scored two points, with Derek Middleton scoring one for Skenagh from play. David Carney sent a free goalwards and Anthony Middleton got his hurl to it to get the ball past the goalie and level matters again. However the next three scores came from Drumcullen to widen the gap back to three. David Carney raised the white flag twice (once from a free) before Drumcullen pointed again from a '65 to keep the gap at two points. In the 18th minute Drumcullen struck a goal and the pressure was mounting on Skenagh. However just five minutes later Skenagh were awarded a penalty and Carney duly rattled the net to bring the gap back to two yet again and this was soon reduced to the minimum with a point from David Carney from a free in the 24th minute. There was a battle to the finish, but Drumcullen got their noses in front and with a just a minute to go were four points to the good. Skenagh battled hard but scores proved elusive. Drumcullen scored their third goal in the final minute to put the issue beyond doubt. Final score Drumcullen 3-17 to 3-10.
