Ballyskenagh’s junior team’s championship hopes came to an end in Shinrone on Saturday evening, 24th August, at the hands of Coolderry. This was a very disappointing result for this team, even allowing for the loss of their top-scorer Kenny Franks (drafted into the senior team), as they performed well below their capabilities, particularly in the first half, when they scored just two points.
Coolderry opened the scoring with ’65 in the first minute and Ciaran Kirwan equalised with a point from play soon after. Coolderry added two further points (one from a free) before Ciaran raised the white flag again, this time from a free. For the remainder of the half, Coolderry got completely on top and went in at half time ahead by 2-7 to 0-2.
Ballyskenagh put in a much stronger second half and scored three points without reply, coming from Anthony Middleton and Olly Ryan twice (one free, one sideline). They battled hard for the remainder of the game, but could not close the gap. The closest they came was seven points (2-8 to 0-7) mid way through the half and Coolderry emerged victorious on a final scoreline of 2-12 to 0-7.
While this result was disappointing, the season is not yet over as this team has qualified for the knock out stages of the league and hopefully they can get something for their efforts from this competition.
