Victory over Drumcullen in U-16 H.C.

Ballyskenach 3-12 ....... Drumcullcn 3-3

The first Ballyskenach U-16 team in a few years got off to a winning start with a good win over Drumcullen in Rath on Monday last. Fielding several young players the team withheld heavy pressure from Drumcullen. The team led by two points at half time.

Half way through the second half a goaled free from Drumcullen brought them to within a point but from then Ballyskenach tacked on scores and a goal from Brendan Murphy followed by two Brendan Franks points sealed the issue.

Goalie Kenny Franks proved age was no barrier with some great saves while all six backs led capable by excellent centre men Michael O'Hara and David Franks defended strongly, midfield kept a good supply of ball to the forwards where all six made the most of it. While Brendan Murphy, Brendan Franks, and David Carney were the main score getters, Andrew Golden, Edward Franks and Derek Middleton were responsible for creating many of the scores. James White and Tony Loughnane also did well when introduced.

Victory over Ballinamere in U-14 B Hurling Final

Our U-14 hurlers did the club proud on Saturday last in St. Brendan’s Park, Birr when they defeated Ballinamere in a very well contested game of hurling played in ideal conditions. It was a great day for all thee young hurlers who took part in the three finals and the arrangements and organisation was first class throughout the afternoon.

The U-14 final started off at a fast pace indeed, with everyone giving their heart on both sides. Ballinamere opened the scoring with a point but then Ballyskenach put a string of points together and a great goal by David Carey. Ballinmere fought back for a tine goal and had a penalty brilliantly saved by Kennie Franks for Ballyskenach. The half ended with Ballyskenach 1-5, Ballinamere 1-1.

Ballyskenach dominated the second half and had another tine goal midwav through the half from Tadhg Maher who had been named to the full forward line.

David Carney completely took over this game and ended up with a personal tally of 1-8. Tadgh Maher a goal and Martin Hayes 0-1 were the other scorers.

However it was a great team display and the conditions were ideal for first time hurling.

Kennie Franks had an outstanding hour in goal bringing off several fine saves with the coolness of a more experienced player and his clearances were always finding a loose player, His penalty save did a lot to dim the hopes of the Ballinmere boys when they were going well in the first half.

In front of him Paul McLoughlin, James White and Shane Kirwan all hurled well right through the match.

Adrian Brooks had an outstanding game on the wing and Padraig McLoughlin was rock solid in the centre. Joe Tuohy played a captains part on the other wing.

Eddie Wynne was in the thick of things and had a fine hour at centre field, and his partner Derek Dennison did some nice hurling making sure their their got a good supply of the ball.

Andrew Golden, Tadgh Maher on the wings never gave up trying, but it was at centre forward that Ballyskenach had their trump card in Carney. He gave a great display and there's no doubt that if he could get rid of his slight tendency to foul, he would be one of the best underage players in the county. Well done David.

Eoghan Franks, though not on the scoring list on this occasion, always seemed to have the beating of his opponent and centred some lovely strokes at 11 years of age time is on his side.

Martin Hayes had been badly hampered for some time now with a leg injury and this has curtailed his speed. Several times on Sat urday he had the ability to control and got the ball in his hand but his speed led him down. Martin has played many fine games for the team and no doubt will do so again once his injury has cleared up. He had a nice point and did his best against all the odds.

Cian Stapleton had a magnificent game at corner forward and later when moved to the wing he showed some lovely touches and is definitely one to watch for the future. .

The subs were Shane Carroll, Philip Condon, Michael Cummins, Ger Maher, David White, Shane O'Hara.

After the game Joe Tuohy capt accepted the Shield on behalf of the team from the secretary of Bord na nOg Mr Pat Condron and gave a fine victory speech.

At this point we have to say well done, especially to P.J. McLoughlin and Eugene Kirwan for all the work they put in with the team since last March. This is the third under age title in a row Ballyskenach have won, having previously won the last two U- I 12's and lets hope with so much talent around and plenty of people who care about the progress of the young lads that there is more to come.

U-16 Semi Final

Ballyskenach 1-5 ....... Killeigh/Raheen 5-4

The U-16's championship ended on Saturday last in Birr when they went down to a far stronger Killeigh/Raheen side on the score of 5-4 to 1-5.

On the day a lot of players did not play to their potential. However 14 of the team are underage again next year so the future looks quite promising.

Trailing by 2-3 to 0-2 at half time any chance of a come back went when Eddie Wynne had a goal disallowed early in the secondhalf after which KIR proceeded to score two quick goals. To the sides credit thev battled to the end but needed another goal or two early in the half.

Well done to all players and mentors Paddy McLoughlin and Denis Mullally for all their work and hopefully next year will reap the awards of thier labour.

Team Kenny Franks, Eoghan Maher, Michael O'Hara, James White, Pariac McLoughlin, David Franks, Joseph Touhy, Brian Keeshan, Eddie Wynne, Barry Keeshan, Brendan Murphy, Tony Loughnane, Brendan Franks, David Carney, Edward Franks. Subs: Matthew Wynne, Shane Carroll.
